In 2019, AGTA met in New Orleans and delegates were given a pre-opening birds-eye view of the effort to fund and construct a new major airport. Donning hardhats, we saw a spanking new airport in its final stages of construction. Delegates attending the 2023 AGTA Spring conference will be able to enjoy the results of their efforts at this magnificent new airport. Delegates will hear about the planning and operations required to close an "old" airport -- and the unexpected challenges ready to arise when turning the switches from old to new --- literally overnight!
As we in the industry know, the airline passenger industry is made of three complementary components -- airlines, airports, and those systems moving the airline passenger to and from the airport. It is no secret that North American airports generate most of their excess revenues over costs through their ground transportation systems – primarily funded by their parking, car rentals, and ground transportation fees. None of these elements can operate successfully without the input and cooperation from the others.
Whether you represent an airport, on- or off-airport parking or car rentals, or if you provide ground transportation to and from the airport curb, you are, or should be, an important and necessary piece of the airport's master planning, developing business strategies to go forward. This AGTA conference in New Orleans will feature general sessions and breakout workshops taking a look at the potential best efforts to implement an airport's plan for the future, whether maintaining the best of the status quo, identifying and implementing vast changes in the future, or scrapping wholesale "what is" for "what could be". These sessions will examine the details in today's Airport Ground Transportation Plans and suggest how airports, parking, and providers can work together to develop the best plan for each unique airport.
Current and future airports and their related transportation providers of the future will necessarily have to address such issues as how to be fiscally responsible and at the same time respond to the national call to utilize electric vehicles, both manned and autonomous. We'll look at current examples of what some airports have implemented related to these innovations. We'll try to determine what makes economic sense in the drive for EV chargers at airports given the very low rate of utilization, and if there is a reasonable charge for that service. Other issues to consider in planning for our future airports will include discussions of ongoing landside topics such as potentially charging the private auto for use of the airport curb, determining appropriate allocation of curb space among taxis, ridesharing, and other passenger vehicle providers, and what airport functions can or should be turned over to the private sector for day-to-day operations. Finally, plans include sessions addressing the issue of attaining a zero carbon footprint, and what makes sense for the airport and the ground transportation system providers?
