Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship
Honoring a Legacy. Investing in the Future.
The Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship was established by resolution of the AGTA Board of Directors to honor the extraordinary leadership, service, and lasting contributions of Dr. Ray Mundy and Sandy Mundy to the Airport Ground Transportation Association and the industry as a whole.
Since 1976, Ray and Sandy have played a central role in shaping AGTA into a critical forum for discussion and collaboration between airports and ground transportation operators. Through their leadership, AGTA has promoted high-quality transportation service, efficient use of airport resources, and sustainable business models for ground operators across North America.
A Scholarship with Purpose
In September 2023, the AGTA Board formally created the Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship in recognition of their 47 years of dedicated service. The scholarship covers expenses related to annually sending a student to attend an AGTA conference, providing direct access to education, networking, and real-world industry insight.
Over their tenure, Ray and Sandy planned and managed more than 90 AGTA conferences, overseeing hotels, speakers, programming, special events, and financial success. These conferences have educated members on evolving trends in:
- Personnel and workforce development
- Vehicles and fleet operations
- Technology and innovation
- Regulations, fees, fares, and policy
All aspects of the airport ground transportation industry have benefited from their work, and this scholarship ensures that legacy continues by investing in future leaders.
Scholarship Recipients
2025 Recipient: Alexander West
AGTA was proud to announce Alexander West as the 2025 Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship recipient.
Alex is a Logistics Captain in the United States Army and a graduate student at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam School of Business. He brings extensive experience in management, planning, development, and logistics resourcing, with military assignments across Tacoma/Seattle, South Korea, White Sands, and El Paso. His work has primarily supported Brigade Combat Teams, with expertise in distribution, transportation, materials requirements planning (MRP), and operations management.
Alex also has specialized experience in aerial resupply, ground logistics, and the deployment of personnel and equipment by air, sea, and rail, offering valuable insight into complex, large-scale transportation operations.
Alex attended the AGTA Fall 2025 Conference in San Antonio, Texas, where he was a featured Tuesday Luncheon Speaker. His presentation focused on the use of air freight within the U.S. Army, logistics and air transportation operations, and emerging developments in autonomous vehicles.
2024 Inaugural Recipient: Kenny Sagona
Kenny Sagona, a student in the Master of Science in Supply Chain Management program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was recognized as the first-ever recipient of the Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship at the AGTA Conference in Salt Lake City in September 2024.
Kenny currently works as a procurement buyer for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics and previously served as a system controller for SkyWest Airlines, managing flight delays, cancellations, and diversion recovery. Drawing on this real-world experience, Kenny delivered a presentation titled “The Role of Airport Ground Transportation in Flight Diversions.”
His presentation addressed the importance of proactive contingency planning during irregular operations and highlighted opportunities for better coordination between airlines and ground transportation providers, particularly to improve the passenger experience during disruptions. Kenny also emphasized the business and service opportunities associated with high-value travelers, who represent a significant portion of airline revenue.
Presenting to the AGTA audience marked the largest professional audience Kenny had addressed to date. He was nominated to present by AGTA Executive Director Dr. Jeff Trombly, who taught Kenny in a network and distribution planning course and recognized the relevance of his research to the industry.
The Mundy Legacy
The Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship was created following a milestone moment in AGTA history, marking the transition of leadership after decades of service.
Dr. Ray Mundy served as AGTA’s Executive Director for 47 years, while Sandy Mundy supported the association in leadership and administrative roles throughout that time. Together, their involvement with AGTA began in 1976 and helped establish a strong foundation for collaboration between industry and academia.
While stepping back from day-to-day roles, Ray and Sandy remain actively engaged with AGTA. Sandy continues to serve as Treasurer, and Ray now holds the role of Senior Advisor to the Board, ensuring their knowledge, guidance, and passion remain part of AGTA’s future.
The Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship stands as a lasting tribute to their service and as a meaningful investment in education, innovation, and the next generation of airport ground transportation leaders.
Supporting the Next Generation
Through the Ray and Sandy Mundy Scholarship, AGTA is proud to support students and emerging professionals who demonstrate leadership potential, academic excellence, and a strong interest in transportation, logistics, and mobility.
